Fielder wins 2012 Home Run Derby 07 09 2012

On July 11, 1988, the day before the Major League Baseball All-Star Game from Cincinnati, TBS televised the annual All-Star Gala from the Cincinnati Zoo. Larry King hosted the broadcast with Craig Sager and Pete Van Wieren handling interviews. The broadcast's big draw would have been the Home Run Derby, which TBS intended on taping during the afternoon, and later airing it in prime time during the Gala coverage. Unfortunately, the derby and a skills competition were canceled due to rain. For the first time in Derby history, Shohei Ohtani became both the first pitcher and the first Japanese player to participate in 2021.

Should there be a tie after either of the first two rounds, a "Swing-Off" takes place. In a Swing-Off, each tied player gets five swings to get as many home runs as possible. If after the 5 swings a tie still remains, players get one more swing to determine the winner. Home runs hit during a first round Swing-Off do not count towards the player's total going into the second round.

The field of players selected currently consists of four American League players and four National League players.

Chris Berman has gained notoriety for his annual hosting duties on ESPN, including his catchphrase, "Back back back...Gone!".

Sure, the pitches look like batting practice, but major leaguers don't stand at the plate and try to hit every pitch into the seats in batting practice. They work on specific things, hitting up the middle, driving the ball to the opposite field, hit-and-run. It's not just power swing after power swing, like it is in the Home Run Derby.

How is MLB going to feel if a team, like the Dodgers, loses a star player for several months because he was trying to knock the cover off the ball to win the Home Run Derby? Is it worth it, really, if Kemp re-injures himself?
